I was giving an English language oral exam, listening to students and marking them on their grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation. I tend to doodle while I do this, and for some reason I drew a ghost - your typical white sheet with eyeholes. I then added glasses, why I don't know, but immediately a line came into my head so I wrote it down: 'The spectre calls in spectacles.' (If you know me well you'll be aware that playing with words is quite high on my list of priorities)
So, a short-sighted spectre - that had potential as a story. Bumping into things, generally making a mess of the whole haunting thing as he learnt the skills of ghosting. I wanted to call him Phil, Phil the Spectre, but then Phil Spector got done for murder and it didn't seem appropriate, so he was renamed Luke. Somewhere along the way his eyesight ceased to be an issue, and he was joined by quite a few more characters, the most notable being Alice.
You can read about them in the Authonomy gold-starred novel, Phasmatis.
